Wright Brothers Day!

Good Morning!

Today is Wright Brothers Day! December 17th!

On this day in 1903, the Wright Brothers, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, took that first flight that propelled them to fame! The flight only lasted 12 seconds and went 120 feet but was enough to show them that their hard work paid off!

Throughout our history, people such as the Wright Brothers inspire us to pursue our dreams and keep trying until you've got it right!

This information was obtained from the Critical Thinking Catalog Parent Newsletter
found here;

Have a Great Friday! Thanks for stopping by!

And FYI; I am leaving my Red Jasper Multi-straned bracelet as my item of the day for another day; 12/17/10. The item of the day will change tomorrow! This bracelet was $30.00 and now is only $22.00. Thanks for your interest!

Wonderful Wacky Wednesday in Western Wisconsin, Cleaning up After the Winter Wonderland!

Wonderful Wacky Wednesday in Western Wisconsin!

Wow! It has been a wacky weather week!
We have had feet of snow here in Western Wisconsin!

Friday night we made way for our cabin in the Northwoods of Wisconsin for a weekend of sledding and relaxation! We got more than we bargained for! By late Friday night, the snow had started. Luckily, we were safe and warm in our cozy cabin. When we awoke Saturday morning, we had blizzard like conditions! It was snowing hard and the blustery winds were blowing the white flakes everywhere! Truly, a winter wonderland set amongst white birch and white pine trees. Well, the weather never really broke; it snowed all day! It was so cold, windy, and snowy that we didn't even go outside!

All was not lost! Christmas cutout cookies were made......my entire family tried the damning, flooding, and flocking I wrote of in a prior post! Of course, we had to eat some, too! After dinner, we settled down to watch one of our favorite holiday movies on DVD.....White Christmas! You can't help but feel good and warm after watching that wonderful movie!

We had warned our children that if the plow didn't come down the road (a dead-end) on Sunday, we would be not leaving! Luckily, I had the cell phone to be able to call in their potential absence from school! We went to bed somewhat resigned to the fact that we might be staying at the cabin longer than planned! What the heck, we were warm, we had food, and we were safe!

Well, as luck would have it, Sunday morning greeted us with blue skies! The plow graced our culde-de-sac by 10am! We would be going home! Our children would be in school Monday morning! Surprisingly, the drive home was not bad. We found it interesting how some towns had cleaned up, post storm, already; while other towns had done a sloppy job!

The big shock came as we reached our driveway at home! We had known we weren't going to be able to get in! But, after parking at our neighbor's farmhouse, walking through 4 foot drifts was daunting! My husband skipped dinner and started the clean up! Two and a half hours later, we were plowed out enough to be able to leave the driveway in the morning. And in another three hours Monday morning, he cleaned up the rest of the driveway and front walk! This was truly a storm!

I have to admit, that after growing up in Western New York and experiencing lake effect squalls and huge blizzards; sometimes we laugh at the winter weather here! This time was different!
The weathermen got it right! The storm came, Western Wisconsin was a Winter Wonderland, and finally on this Wonderful Wacky Wednesday, we are dug out and back to normal. Just in time for the next storm!

Happy holidays! Thanks for stopping by!

Poinsettias!!!!

Good Monday Morning!

I thought that today I would post on the Poinsettia Plant! Many of us adorn our homes with this beautiful plant, once thought of as a weed, at this time of year! As a master gardener volunteer, I have taught a group of school aged children, each year for the last seven years about some of our most popular holiday plants. Here is a fact sheet on the poinsettia!

Poinsettias

  • Poinsettias are native to Mexico- Chile, Peru, and Brazil. In those places, the plant has other names; Crown of the Andes & Flores de Noche Buena (Flowers of the Holy Night).
  • Poinsettias botanical name is Euphorbia pulcherrima which means “very beautiful” –the plants belong to a family of plants that ooze a milk-like sap. This sap can be irritating to skin.
  • When poinsettias grow in nature, they can be over 10 feet tall and are considered flowering shrubs. (This is in Mexico).
  • Poinsettias were introduced to The United States in 1825 by Joel Poinsett, for whom the flower is named (in the U.S. only).
  • The colored parts of the plant are the leaves or bracts. The flowers are in the center of each set of bracts. The freshest flowers have little or no pollen fallen from around their bracts.
  • Contrary to popular belief, poinsettias are NOT poisonous. An Ohio State study found that a 50 pound child would have to eat over 500 bracts to get a mild stomach ache. This does not mean that you eat them, however! The Aztecs used this plant for medicinal purposes in the 1400s. However, I do not suggest you eat this plant for any reason!
  • Poinsettias are the most popular holiday plant today. Most are grown in California at the Paul Ecke Ranch. There are over 100 different kinds!
  • December 12th is National Poinsettia Day.
  • There are legends associated with the poinsettia plant. Many stories and even a few movies tell these stories.
  • It is debatable how the word poinsettia is pronounced. It is somewhat like the word tomato (having two separate pronunciations, acceptable).
  • One of the best showings of poinsettias I've ever seen is at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.
  • Last December, I saw poinsettias growing like a hedge on the island of Maui!
  • Although poisettias come in many colors, red is still most popular!
Enjoy these special holiday plants! And while you've got a moment stop by my etsy shop for any last minute gifts you might need! I am running a 20% off sale on everything..........just enter the coupon code at check out ..... happyholidays20.

Holiday Arts and Crafts Show!

Wow! What a busy week it has been!
I have been busy, busy, busy this week!
And I haven't even decorated my house for the holidays yet!

One of the things keeping me busy this week was the local Arts and Crafts show I was in yesterday. Unfortunately, we had our first snow storm of the year here in the Coulee Region of Wisconsin. Friday night, it starting coming down and by early morning Saturday, we had about 6 inches of snow! Luckily, my husband got our driveway plowed before I had to leave for the art show. The art show took place at a local mall, near our house, so it wasn't too bad of a drive to get there! However, I think the snow kept people home or possibly made them forget about the show!

The show was a good experience for me, but it was very slow!!! This was the case for all vendors, not just me! And of course, as is common lately, lots of jewelry vendors! This was only my second show. I really wanted to do it to gain a local business presence. So, although monetarily, it was not great (I did make back my booth fee and some additional); I did use the opportunity to network with local artists and promote my etsy shop. I handed out a lot of business cards. I obtained a list of local shows and kept my ears open for what shows were successful for people. I came home tired and happy, still in possession of many pieces of jewelry; but wiser! I will be checking my google analytics to see if more local people are viewing my jewelry!

The show also spurred me on in thinking of the direction my jewelry would take in the next year. I have set some goals;

-I will make a business facebook page
-I will make a website (off etsy)
-I will do a larger, juried art show
-I will make a new line of branded jewelry
-I will display my pieces of jewelry differently
-I will no longer pursue those ventures that are unproductive or unsuccessful

Already, I have put some of the ideas into action! I started a working on a website last night and will get a facebook business page up before the end of this month.

November, again, was successful for my jewelry. Again, my biggest sales of the year will be from my Annual Jewelry Show at my house. I am completing the last of my special orders for that. My etsy shop sales were slow in November; lagging behind my September and October. That is all fine; given the success of my home show. So, all in all, I am very positive about my jewelry ventures in 2010.

I'm looking forward to an even bigger, better 2011 for Carol's Jewelry Orchard.
To thank you for your support; I am currently offering 20% off everything in my shop. Just put happyholidays20 as the coupon code on the etsy check out page for my shop.

Happy Holidays,
Carol

An Online Photo Option!

Happy Sunday!

Today, I 'd like to tell you about an online photography site that I've been using and is just wonderful! It is called Shutterfly. You can reach the site at this address;

I have been using Shutterfly for several months now.
This is what I like about their site;

- Easy, Fast Picture uploading

- Organized, easy to navigate through

- Great products

I have ordered 4x6 prints, 5x7 prints, 8x10 prints, and 11x14 prints.
I have ordered two photobooks---both of vacations.

- Fast service. E-mail notification of orders, order history look up available.
In all cases, my orders arrived well before I anticipated them!

- Organized storage of uploaded photographs

- Connected to social networking sites

I have not used this part of the shutterfly site; as I do not have a facebook or twitter acct.
I imagine it would work just great! Hmmmm.....maybe I'll have to try a business facebookpage, just to see how this works.

- Special offers abound. Their website always seems to have special offers to entice you!
I'm not sure that I've paid for any shipping!

Why did I decide to post about this today? Well, I just ordered my Holiday cards from Shutterfly! I couldn't decide on the card, so I ordered two different ones! Can't wait until they arrive! I'm sure I'll be pleased! So, if you are looking to get photographs printed; try Shutterfly.

Dams, Flooding, and Flocking!!!! Oh, my!

Good Morning! I know I usually do a Wordless Wednesday post but today I'd like to write!

First, I am going to try and post my Item of the Day here on my blog! It will be an item from my shop offered at a discounted (usually hugely discounted price). But, the clinker is; it will only be offered at that price for the day it is listed as the Item of the Day. The sale expires at 11pm EST each day! For all my local customers, if I know you (like you were just at my home jewelry show), you will not have to pay shipping on any item of the day or piece from my shop for that matter! I must know you personally for you to get the waive on the shipping fees, so that I can safely and personally deliver the item to you!

With that all said, my ITEM OF THE DAY for 11/17/10 is;
It was $30.00, today it is only $20.00. Sale offer good until 11 pm EST tonight! The bracelet is pictured above and contains all sterling silver, swarovski crystals, and artisan made fused glass beads all in a lovely Caribbean Blue Color. Reminds me of the Turquoise Blue Waters of Bermuda. Sterling Silver has greatly gone up in price within the last few months. All of my new jewelry creations will have to carry a higher price if made with sterling. Grab the pieces made with sterling in my shop now to get great value on some lovely, handcrafted but underpriced jewelry!

Look for My Item of the Day post here, each day leading up to the holidays!

Now for my main post!
I went to a cookie decorating class last night! It was very nice! The instructor knew her stuff and could explain how to decorate the cookies (cutouts) very simply! I love cutout cookies and have always wanted to take mine up a notch......I'd love them to look like the cookies in those holiday magazine articles!

First, we damned the cookies! No, no......were weren't mad at them; we were making a border or outline of the areas to be filled in. This was done with a thicker Royal Frosting. I 've done this before but alas, one of my damns broke! D.......*!>*^!

Next, we flooded the cookies! No, no.....not with tears of frustration, but with a thinner version of the Royal Frosting! Now, I had done this before, too. But, I learned last night that you can just thin out the thicker royal frosting that you had in your pastry bag for outlining with a little water! Whoa.....go slow adding the water! If you thin it too much; your frosting will never harden! I also have always "flooded" with a pastry bag. This instructor had us do it with a spoon! It worked pretty slick!

And lastly, we did a little flocking.......from reading my Martha Stewart Living Magazines in the past......I know that the word flocking does lend itself to more that what you do in cardmaking or scrapbooking......more than in jewelry box making......The word flocking applies to cookie decorating, too!

It was a fun class. The only downer was that I ate both the cookies that I decorated and upon my arrival home, my family wanted to know where their cookies were!!!!! I guess I'll be making some real soon!

Have a Wonderful Wednesday!

I'm a weirdo.....I know!

Okay, now I'm going to admit being a weirdo! I love to volunteer!

This week, I resumed volunteering where my sons have gone to school. It is something I have done for the last 11 years! Yeah, that is a long time. However, it is something that I truly enjoy!

I think I'm lucky to be able to volunteer. I love working with children and helping, in some small way, to "plant a seed" in their minds. The "seed" could be knowledge, curiosity, caring, encouragement, creativity, or any number of other things!

I have tried, this year, to consolidate my volunteering. Instead of running back and forth several times a week to school, I am going in on one day. In the morning, on my day of volunteering, I am leading a book club for first graders! It is the third year I have done this activity for the same teacher! I love it! The first graders are the "higher level readers" in this particular classroom, so I just get to work on fluency and comprehension. Most of them do a really good job reading, already. As I said, I feel really fortunate to be able to lead this book club! I enjoy picking out the book for each week and seeing the students enjoy the story, as well as the time we spend together.

Then, in the afternoon, I will be facilitating a writer's circle for a third grade classroom. This is new for me! It will be a welcome challenge. I like to write! Unfortunately, I've started a number of articles, stories, lesson plans, and few are continued to their end. It will be a challenge to guide some "budding" writers, especially when they are still learning writing conventions and finding their voice. Yet, I am still very much looking forward to this!

It may be that my love of reading ignites my interest in writing. I do know that the more I read, the more I am stimulated to write. In the first week of my writers circle, that is the one thing I tried to impress upon my group of third graders, great writers read a lot!

So, I came home late last week exhilarated!!! I am fortunate to be a volunteer and fortunate to be able to volunteer to do something I love! Thank you to my childrens' teachers, past and present, for allowing me to contribute! I encourage you all to try and volunteer. Pick an activity you love or a cause your are passionate about; you're sure to love being a volunteer, too!
Thanks for visiting my blog today! Have a great week!

October Shop Snapshot.......Steady the course!

Hello!

As some of you know, last month I offered a feature post giving a snapshot of what September was like for Carol's Jewelry Orchard! Today, albeit a few days late, I will offer the same post on the month of October 2010.

October was a good month with steady sales, bringing in one more sale than September for a total of 12!

I received a custom order for a bracelet in those 12 sales and the customer had this to say;
Hello
Just wanted to let you know that I received the bracelet today and it is "Beautiful".
I love it and you did a great job...........
Many Blessings to you,
L.T.

This customer received her custom ordered TEACHER bracelet in less than two weeks after placing the order with me! Wow! In part, this was due to the speedy shipping of my supplier!
Thanks, Artbeads! The custom bracelet is featured above and only contains Sterling Silver and Swarovski Crystals.

On the last day of October, I had a customer buy 4 pairs of earrings from my shop! She had placed an order for two pairs, two days prior to that, also! She is a new etsy shopper! Congratulations go to her for figuring out the Etsy/Paypal checkout system without difficulty! I upgraded her shipping to priority mail and gave a partial paypal refund on shipping fees. Please note the cool things that might happen when you buy from Carol's jewelry Orchard! She should be getting her earrings today or tomorrow! I can't wait to receive the feedback on those! And thanks to those of you who do leave feedback for your purchases! It is extremely important to me to hear that you are pleased with your purchases!

I also received 6 custom orders (not counted in the 12 sales for October) from family members. I have to admit that I haven't started these yet, due to being extremely busy with getting ready for my second annual Jewelry House Showing, next weekend! But, I have ordered the components I need for those orders! Rest assured they will get the orders well before they need them!

And finally, just in the last day or two; some of my jewelry has been featured on other blogs/links/treasuries. If you are in the mood for shopping, check this blog out for daily features from a forum thread called Item of the Day on Etsy. It features some wonderful deals from some very nice artists. The sale is only good for the day it is listed!
http://christinemarieford.com/?p=668 Check it out daily! My Red Jasper Multi-stranded Bracelet was featured on 11/1/10. Check the post for that day to see it or visit my shop.

Oh, and let us not forget about my first official blog giveaway! I only had a few people enter the giveaway in October for a beautiful PINK Fused Glass Pendant Necklace surrounded by swarovski crystals. The winner, "Zoe", was thrilled to be notified that she was picked by random.org. Look for additional giveaways from my shop in the future!

So, that was my October! I'm really looking forward to my show this month. It will be exciting to see what my local customers are interested in! Thanks for stopping by and please visit my shop at; http://carolsjewelryorchard.etsy.com for a partial listing of what will be at my show.

Arg!!!! I hate wasting time!

Good Wednesday Morning! Instead of my Wordless Wednesday posting I need to "vent" about wasting time! I had a morning yesterday, where I felt about 2 hours of my time was wasted and then, it got worse!

I absolutely hate wasting time! Time is a precious thing! As I've told you before, I am a very goal directed person and to meet the goals I set for myself, I am almost constantly in motion. Rarely, do I engage in "doing" nothing. Yes, I can be a self-described type A personality or said to be "wound tight". But, I do get a lot done and am successful at most of what I do.

However, yesterday morning, I ran into technical difficulties. I was working on invitations to my second annual jewelry showing. This year, I had decided to save ink and just upload my pictures to Walmart. After spending almost two hours uploading and checking the cropping, I went to order the pictures......then, the site asks again if I want "true" 4x6 prints or 4x6 prints. Well, to make a long story short I wanted the "true" prints so the whole image would show.

Then, the order showed that some (about half) of the prints had been converted and the other half weren't. Well, I figured that the most important print was the invitation with the text layered over a picture of coreopsis from my yard (very fallish.....since my show will be in November). I definitely didn't want the print cropped off!

After adjustments were made and saved, I went to upload and now the picture would not upload! ARG!!!! Truly, I am not a technical idiot! I am computer savvy and this was extremely irritating! Finally, I got it uploaded and saved. I sent in the order!

Later in the afternoon, I went to pick up the photos......my order was fine! Except for the fact that after all that messing around I ended up forgetting that I needed about 30 of this one photograph (the invite with the text) and got one instead! (My 30 must have been deleted after the upload failed).

I admit that as the morning wore on, I became more and more frustrated! My frustration prevented me from seeing that on my order I only had one text/photo! So, much time was wasted yesterday! Obviously, I'll need to resubmit that picture today! In hindsight, I was trying to save time and money by having my photos printed at an outside lab. Now, I realize it would have been easier, a lot more time efficient, and probably about the same cost to print the photos myself! Oh, well.....there's always next year!

I'm off to resubmit my photo and finish my invitations! Hopefully, my time will be better spent today!

Please take a minute to enter my blog giveaway for a beautiful, one of a kind fused glass pendant necklace. It ends 10/25/10. Just leave a comment on the blog post describing the giveaway (two posts ago), and you'll be entered! Right now, only one person has entered!

Thanks,
Carol
