Independence Day......

One of my favorite holidays is July Fourth! From the gorgeous American composed music to the lavish firework displays and Patriotic themed decor, I love all that is a symbol of Independence Day!

Over the last year I have read some American History! It is something I never thought that I would do electively, but I became intrigued with it after viewing the PBS movie mini-series on John Adams. Seeing the film, inspired me to finish reading his biography, John Adams, written by David McCullough. After doing that, I was thirsty for more and ordered two books on John Adams and his life. One is a compilation of letters that John had written and letters he had received over his long life time. The writers and receivers include, Abigail Adams---John's wife, his children, Thomas Jefferson, and Ben Franklin, among others. While this is not a book I find I can read at length or finish in a course of days, I do find myself returning to it with curiosity. The other book that I haven't really gotten to yet is one of solely the letters between Adams and Jefferson. These two great men had a long and complicated relationship, born at the time of our country's birth. And maybe, to me, symbolize polar extremes of opinions but also how those extremes can find common ground in a civilized and gentile manner.

I do know that as I look at my yard and the land around me on this July Fourth, I'll be glad that I share in the history of a great nation, founded by these extraordinary men. I know that I'll be listening to music from some great American composers, and I know that I'll be thankful that it is, in fact, Independence Day.

In honor of this fun, yet important holiday, I did make a few pieces of patriotic jewelry... please click on the pictures to the right to view these listings or visit my shop at;

Although, these pieces contain Sterling Silver Components and Unique Glass Beads, I have priced them reasonably to sell so You can be Festive for the Fourth or Patriotic anytime of the year! These would also make fabulous gifts for anyone serving in our armed forces!!!
What a great way to thank the ladies that serve our country!

You can go home again......

One of my favorite places to go when I make a visit home, as I did this last week, is Wegmans Supermarket. I grew up with this chain of supermarkets. They have grown and expanded over the last 30 or so years and to go there is really a shopping experience!

I have lived many places in the U.S. and have yet to find a Supermarket, as super as Wegmans!

You can find such a diversity of food, specialty items, homegrown produce, and even gift items! Their range of products under one roof is amazing!

I missed making a visit on my last trek home. I had made up my mind, that this time, I was not going to skip it......no matter what any well meaning family member had to say about finding good food or deals elsewhere! So, I made a concentrated effort to make a lengthy stop at the grocery store of my days gone by that obviously has a place in my heart (or stomach)!

On this visit; I picked up some Western New York specialty food items such as local cheese, mustard, and chicken wing sauces. And I was able to get some t-shirts, hawaiian micro-brewed beer, and locally made hot dogs to bring home with me. Each time I sample some of the food or wear the t-shirt, I'll experience a taste of home and some really fond memories of a great grocery store that I still miss....many years after moving away!

If you'd like to read more about the Wegmans supermarket chain; here are some links.....

And check out their menu magazine online at;

I was able to view the hard copy of this terrific kitchen supplement while on my visit! Tons of great, simple, and probably delicious recipes complete with wine and beer accompaniments!

And don't forget to check out my Etsy shop this week for some NEW jewelry postings at;

Thanks, Carol

Making Jewelry.....Back in the Groove!

Now that school is out and we are in the summertime groove, I have found more time to actually sit down and make some jewelry! Over the last week, I've made several new pieces that I really love.

Last weekend, I made several of my new wire wrapped rings. I found a tutorial on how to do these and I have to say; it takes a little practice, but I do like the results! I was able to make a delivery to a store that buys my jewelry locally. They liked the rings, too! So.....I am hoping for my first wholesale order from them. I will offer these rings in seasonal colors, so stay tuned if the colors I've picked aren't what you like. Check out the pictures!

I also made some really summery pieces; a turquoise shell necklace, a lava rock and shell necklace, and dichroic glass bracelet. See these pictures to the right! Clicking on any of them will take you to my shop!

So, with the glass being half full...I am back in the creative groove. This seems to come in cycles for me, as it does probably for most artists. If I am incredibly busy, as May seemed to be with volunteer obligations for me, the creative juices just don't seem to flow.

The empty side of the glass was that I posted many sales this past week (up to 35% off everything in my shop) and free shipping, yesterday, and had no sales! And I did promote; on craft cult for a week and on the etsy forums. Yesterday, I won an auction for a project wonderful ad spot on another artist's blog. I will need to be creative in finding some new advertisement. If there's any suggestions, please let me know!

Thanks, and have a great week!

Gardening with Clematis.

Well, after a perfectly beautiful Wordless Wednesday here in Wisconsin, we are back to a gentle rain today. I like rain. Especially, gently falling rain. And it is saving me from watering my plants!

I was wondering what to post about today when I looked outside and saw that one of my plants had started to bloom! Viola! Well, actually no,....Clematis! I have two of these lovely blooming vines. And although I have been a gardener for many years, it was not until about three years ago that I decided to try a Clematis. I was encouraged to try it as I had inherited a coach light by my front walk when we moved and it looked very barren. I did some reading and researching on Clematis before jumping in. At the time, I was getting the magazine Garden Gate and there was a great reference article on clematis. See the link;

The reason I did some research is that this plant is divided into three sub-groups based on when the plant needs to be pruned. I basically wanted to know what I needed to do to properly take care of the plant. I knew I wanted a Jackmanii cultivar, which is a beautiful deep purple. After I had success with that one plant, I had gotten an obelisque and wanted to try another. For that plant, I chose one in the same pruning category "C" which was Comtesse de Bouchaud which has light pink flowers.

Another tip about clematis is that their "feet" or the base of the plant likes to be in shade; while the face (or flowers) likes to be in the sun! So, for my coach light Jackmanii I planted black-eyed Susans at the base and for my Comtesse de Bouchaud the base was a carpet phlox.

Well, what I saw today was a very beautiful deep pink clematis blooming on my obelisque. You can see the picture for yourself. However, I am quite certain that this is not Comtesse de Bouchaud Clematis. It must be another variety....although I am certain it is a group "c". I am thinking now that the Comtesse died out after only a year and I replaced it last year. This one is gorgeous, however! I just better spend a few minutes tomorrow going through old plant tags to find out what variety it is!

Whatever it may be, I'm pleased to see it looking so fine in my backyard!! Thanks for tuning in! Don't forget to check out the clematis pictures at the right! Thanks ~ Carol

Good Summertime Movie!!!

Are you looking for a good summertime movie?

We were too, this past weekend.

We had to watch DVD's from our collection, as we were without cable.

We selected, Field of Dreams (1989), starring Kevin Costner.

Although this isn't a new movie, the story remains timely and charming.

Set in Iowa, a young farmer plows under his corn crop to build a baseball diamond, complete with lights! And magically, baseball players from the past appear to play ball, all thinking it might be heaven. It is just Iowa, but each player has a destiny to fulfill. And the field holds some magic for the young farmer as well and brings closure to his relationship with his father, a one time baseball catcher!

If you haven't seen this movie and like baseball, a good story, and are somewhat of a romantic and believer in all things possible; this is a good pick for you! If you remember seeing this movie, you'll remember that it is worth seeing again! You'll be glad that you take the time to watch it!

Just a reminder that I am having my one year ETSY anniversary sale......going on now!
